Mestas Will Coach At Goddard

Chaunte'l Powell CCSR Editor    Anthony Mestas says he’s always coached with a “big school mentality.” Thursday morning he announced he will be the new boys basketball coach at Goddard High, meaning he’ll be able to take his “big school mentality” to, well, a big school.  The former Hagerman boys basketball coach spent a decade with the Bobcats and led them to two class 1A state titles, their most recent one coming this past season.  He inherits a Rocket squad that returns seven of its eleven players including Trent Johnson and Ricky Roybal, who helped lead the team in scoring right behind senior Josh Wagner.  In addition to getting acquainted with his players, Mestas must also familiarize himself with other teams in his district and class.  “Probably just the adjustment of having to study more film now and break down the opponents,” Mestas said when asked what his biggest challenge this year will be. “At Hagerman, I got to know a lot of those teams year, after year, after year. At Goddard, I’ll really have to focus on what needs to get done and who our opponents are and break our opponents down.” Towards the south end of the city awaits one of those opponents. The Roswell Coyotes are not only their district rivals, but the defending 4A state champions as well. Mestas said his current roster has potential and though it may be a tall order, he feels they can get to the level of play that Roswell High…

Goddard Loses A Heartbreaker To Piedra Vista

Chaunte'l Powell CCSR Editor  ALBUQUERQUE–When Alan Edmonson accepted the baseball head coaching position at Goddard High, he said his goal was to turn Goddard into a powerhouse and and bring the school it’s first baseball title in almost a quarter of a century. His squad came within one run of achieving the state title goal Saturday, but ultimately lost a 7-6 heartbreaker to Piedra Vista in the 2014 New Mexico National Guard State Baseball Championships 4A title game.  The Rockets got off to a shaky start and found themselves trailing 7-2 midway through. Still, they managed to put together a late game run. A double from Taryn Nunez scored two and cut the lead to three in the top of the sixth. The defense would hold the Panthers scoreless for two straight innings and set  up a dramatic top of the seventh inning. Josh Wagner would draw a walk. Cody French stepped up to the plate and hit a huge RBI triple. Gaylen Young would fly out, but still allowed French to come home. It was suddenly just a one run game with only one out. The next two Rockets would ground and fly out to end the game.  “We gave ourselves chances to win, things just didn’t go our way today,” Edmonson said.  The Rockets actually got on the board first in the top of the first inning, after a single from French brought Wagner home. French had a very solid day offensively, but struggled on  the mound, giving…
