ALBUQUERQUE — Marika Trujillo set the tone for the AAAA state tournament girls quarterfinal action Tuesday when she opened the game with back-to-back treys.

After that, Roswell never looked back, pounding Volcano Vista 59-23 to advance to Thursday’s semifinal action.

“She jumped started the game,” said coach Joe Carpenter. “Marika’s one of the kids we rely on for outside shooting, and she did an excellent job today.”

The sophomore was 3-for-6 from the outside and led the team with 11 points.

And that low “high point” total says a lot of why the Lady Coyotes win.

Even though it was a state tournament game, everyone played and only one player didn’t score.

ABILENE, Texas — The Bronco women’s tennis team hit the road March 5-6 to take on two teams in the NCAA’s division II Lone Star Conference, plus the NJCAA’s third-ranked women’s tennis team in the country, Lee College.

Friday’s play began against Lee College.

Top seed Karla Martinez defeated the Rebel’s ace, Dionecia Akina in a split set tie-breaker. Martinez and Akanesi Fa then teamed up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Akina and Manuela Gomez in a very close pro set, 9-8. Breigh Shotwell and Deborah Wright both fell in singles play and again in doubles.

Friday afternoon’s match was against NCAA D2 school Abilene Christian University. The Lady Broncos were unable to snag a win in either singles or doubles play, but both Martinez and Fa came close, forcing tie-breakers in their singles matches.

The Roswell softball team came back from its opening weekend in Farmington 0-4, with losses to top ranked Piedra Vista, Aztec, Farmington and Bloomfield. So the Coyotes had something to prove in their season opener vs. Clovis.

And they did indeed prove that they can win, and win big, with a 13-3 and 12-8 doubleheader sweep of AAAAA Clovis Tuesday.

“I’m not used to that, but I think that tournament right there prepared us to come into these games right here,” said coach Art Sandoval of the Farmington losses. “We had some good teams up there, but I think it really prepared us and got to see some of the things we had to work on.”

All season long, Sierra seventh-grade coach Derrick Gomez has been saying his squad could beat anyone. And Tuesday, in the city championship, that prediction came true, as the Eagles came from No. 3 in the seedings to top Berrendo 40-37 in an overtime game that was a nail biter to the end.

“I’m proud of these guys,” said the clearly excited coach. “They played an excellent game. Free throws were huge in this game and we came through big time on them. I’m very impressed with all of them. Love ’em to death. That’s my team right there.”

The game opened up with long runs by both teams.

The Bulldogs went on a 9-2 run, then the Eagles came back with a 12-2 run of their own — topped by a buzzer-beating 3 by Ignacio Avila — to lead 14-11 after one.

While the young squads should have been nervous playing in Goddard’s Launch Pad with crowds of screaming fans cheering for both sides, those nerves didn’t seem to show until the second quarter, when there were more turnovers than points scored.

RIO RANCHO — The story of the Hagerman girls basketball season could be told by looking at the benches during the quarterfinal round of the Class AA state tournament.

When the game was underway, Peñasco’s chairs at the Santa Ana Star Center had three coaches and six players lined up to cheer their teammates on.

On the Hagerman side was coach Casey Crandall and two subs. The floor seats looked as empty as the stands for the 8 a.m. game.

Despite that disparity, the “Lucky 7” Lady Bobcats finished the season with a 20-7 record, winning their district and the first round of the state tournament before falling to the Panthers 56-39 Tuesday morning.

Just getting that far was a learning experience for both Crandall and his team.
