Panthers battle Colts despite heavy hearts

The Lady Panthers had a lot more on their minds than a volleyball game Thursday, but they still managed to give NMMI a good fight, falling 25-15, 25-19, 25-21 in a match that got more exciting with every game.
Lake Arthur students learned early Thursday morning that former elementary school coach Henry Jimenez lost his life in a motorcycle accident early in the day.
“It wasn’t a very good day today,” said senior Jazmin Davila. “Our elementary coach passed away this morning, and we were all very upset. I was really hurt by it. We didn’t come in very strong. We were all kind of bummed, pretty much, but as the game went on, we prayed to him and asked him to give us strength to change the game, and as the game went on, he helped us out a lot, I believe.”
The Panthers fought from Game 1, but it wasn’t until the third game that the Colts had to really hold on.

Broncos thump Monterrey Prep in season opener
Staff Report
CANUTILLO, Texas — It was a long road trip to Canutillo, Texas, Saturday for the Bronco football team, but well worth the ride as NMMI opened its season with a 55-19 drubbing of Monterrey Tech.
The team from the private Mexican university met the Broncos at Canutillo High School, just north of El Paso, and for about two-and-a-half quarters, it was a close game.
NMMI led 10-7 after the first quarter and 17-13 at the half.
With about eight minutes left in the third, it was a 25-19 game. The Rams had the ball on the 30-yard line and the Broncos had just thrown an interception.

Berrendo sweeps Mountain View, but Mustangs battle
Karen Boehler

The Berrendo volleyball teams took both ends of a seventh/eighth grade doubleheader Thursday, but it wasn’t for a lack of effort — at least, not on the part of the Mountain View seventh graders.
The Mustangs took the first three points in Game 1 — the first on an ace by Rayanne Duran — and held the lead until the Bulldogs tied it at 6-6.
After that, the lead bounced back and forth, with Mountain View going up 16-12 before Berrendo went ahead 22-20 on a solid kill by Sara Cain.
The Mustangs came back to tie at 22-all, but a service error and two strong serves by Melanie Garcia — one an ace just fair — gave the Bulldogs the 25-22 victory.

Lady Rocket soccer still looking for two full halves
LAS VEGAS, N.M. — Being short five varsity players didn’t help the Goddard girls soccer team at Las Vegas Robertson Thursday.
The Cardinals shut the Rockets down, winning 3-0 in a game that saw four starters and one sub on the bench because of injuries.
“That could have been one of our problems tonight: a lot of young, inexperienced players out there on the field,” said coach Betty Elizondo. “But I will say the second half, we did play very well and I was pretty proud of the way they played the second half. We’re just going to have to get two halves together, and hopefully we’ll come out on top.”
Elizondo said the first half was sluggish — “Just really slow to the ball and not playing our game,” she said — and although they woke up for the second half, it was too little too late as Robertson scored all its goals in the first half.
